Contractors Getting Ready For A Busy Year

If you’re planning on getting some remodeling done this year, you won’t want to procrastinate booking your contractor. Harvard University’s Joint Center for Housing Studies is forecasting double digit increases in year-over-year growth for the remodeling sector, which means contractors will be in high demand. It also means there could be a shortage of building supplies, especially of granite because of the current kitchen reno trend of replacing laminate countertops with the more durable stone. You’ll have a smaller selection if you don’t jump on the bandwagon soon. Granite won’t be the only material impacted—roofing, flooring, and paint could also run short in supply as we move towards the warmer months and people start thinking about using their tax refund money to do a little renovation work.

Home Improvement Deferred No Longer
Eric S. Belsky is managing director of Harvard’s Joint Center and he said in a news release, “The ongoing growth that we’ve seen in home prices, housing starts, and existing home sales is also being reflected in home improvement activity. As owners gain more confidence in the housing market, they are likely to undertake home improvements that they have deferred.”

Use Consumer Reports When Doing Renovation Shopping
As you start thinking about what around your house you’d like to change, consider visiting It’s a nonprofit organization that tests cars, appliances, electronics, toys, you name it, to see if it lives up to its advertising and if it’s good quality. Advertising became big just before WWII in 1936 and there was no regulation of it at first. That was why Consumer Reports was originally founded: “To work for a fair, just, and safe marketplace for all consumers and to empower consumers to protect themselves.”

They work through mystery shoppers, testing scientists, and technical experts to make sure all their reviews are fair and impartial. This means they accept no samples and advertise for no brand. Consumer Reports also has a magazine by the same name which is one of the top circulated in the country.

Using The Website
Their website is user friendly. You can find ratings on products by searching for them, or you can look them up by category, which categories include cars, appliances, home & garden, babies & kids, electronics, money, shopping, and health. Once you find the product you’re looking for, you can browse buying guides and consumer reviews, and you can even purchase items straight through the Consumer Reports website.
